Earlier this month, the FDA approved full-strength (0.1%) Differin for over-the-counter sale—and as far as beauty news goes, this is about as huge as it gets… In case you’re not familiar with Differin (or its technical drug name, adapalene), this topical gel is part of the retinoid family of vitamin A derivatives, which also includes Retin-A, Renova and a slew of others.
Differin and its retinoid cousins have been prescribed for more than 30 years for the treatment of acne. And in addition to helping keep breakouts at bay, just about any dermatologist will tell you these topicals are one of the most effective anti-aging products as well.
Here’s the lowdown on why this is exciting… Differin is only FDA-approved for the treatment of acne. So if your derm has been prescribing it (or another retinoid) off-label to thwart fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration and other signs of aging, you’ve likely been paying a pretty penny since insurance only covers it for acne. But now that it will be available over-the-counter, you can easily get your mitts on it and enjoy clear, youthful skin!
